470: New features and fixes in Sibelius 4.1
Sibelius 4.1 includes a number of new features and many small fixes and improvements. The complete list is below.
Jump to: New features | Fixes and other improvements
New features in Sibelius 4.1
Bar numbers
- New options on the Bar numbers page of House Style > Engraving Rules allow Sibelius to display a range of numbers (e.g. 58) above or below a multirest.
- Bar numbers can now be dragged any distance in any direction (rather than being constrained to just 3 spaces, as in earlier versions). Note that if you drag a bar number further than 3 spaces in a Sibelius 4.1 score, it will appear at a maximum of 3 spaces from its default position when opened in Sibelius 4.0 (and if exported as a Sibelius 3 or 2 file).
Dynamic parts
- Transposition changes and key signatures can now be applied to individual dynamic parts, allowing the creation of multiple parts based on the same staff in the score, each in a different transposition and key if necessary. It is also possible to create a key change at a position in the part where no key signature appears in the score (equivalent to creating a key signature with the One staff only option switched on, i.e. no double barline is drawn)
- Tuplet brackets/numbers can now be flipped independently in dynamic parts
ManuScript language
- New version of the ManuScript Language.pdf file, with a number of errors and omissions corrected
- New BarObject object methods, ShowInScore(), ShowInParts(), ShowInAll(), and new read/write variable Hidden, documented on page 52 of ManuScript Language.pdf
- New DEFAULTPARTAPPEARANCE argument for the ApplyHouseStyle method, to allow the selective importing of the Default Multiple Part Appearance component of house style files
- New Score object method ResetSounds(), which resets the sounds of the current score to the users default device and sound set choices
- New Score variable PartName, which corresponds to the Part Name field in the File > Score Info dialog
Manuscript papers
All the supplied manuscript papers and house styles have been fully updated.
Music fonts
- Its now possible to use PostScript (Type 1) versions of the Opus, Inkpen2 and Helsinki music fonts with Sibelius 4.1 on Mac OS X
- Third-party music fonts (e.g. Jazz, Maestro, Petrucci, etc.) now work correctly with Sibelius 4.1 (Mac only)
Note input
- New Toggle Notes/Rests command in the Notes category (on the Menus and shortcuts page of File > Preference) that mimics the behavior of the 0 key on the numeric keypad in Sibelius 2 and 3, which can therefore now be assigned to another key
- New Advance caret command in the Notes category (on the Menus and shortcuts page of File > Preference) that mimics the behavior of the Space bar in Sibelius 2 and 3, which can therefore now be assigned to another key
Opening MIDI files
New checkbox and combo box in the Open MIDI File dialog to let the user specify the frame rate used for importing timecode and hit points. This is needed because the MIDI SMPTE offset event doesnt describe 29.97fps formats and so each software package that generates MIDI files uses a different convention.
Playback
- New Play checkbox in the Playback panel of Properties allows the user to choose whether a one-note tremolo or z on stem (buzz roll) should play back.
- New options for playback via the new Sibelius Sounds sound libraries (only present if you have either Garritan Personal Orchestra Sibelius Edition or Sibelius Rock and Pop Collection installed).
Playback dictionary
A new Effect type has been added for Staff text in the Play > Dictionary dialog. Users can now map a term in the playback dictionary to a specific MIDI controller message, e.g. Let ring maps to a Control change of Controller 64, Value 127 (sustain pedal)
Plug-ins
- New Plug-ins > Batch Processing > Convert Folder of MusicXML Files plug-in, converts all MusicXML files found in a given folder into Sibelius files
- New Plug-ins > Notes and Rests > Add Slash Noteheads for Parts plug-in, providing an improved solution for showing slash noteheads at the correct position on the staff in both the non-transposing full score and transposed dynamic parts
Sibelius Reference
Sibelius Reference has been revised for Sibelius 4.1, with up-to-date details of all the changes and improvements
Textures
New default desk texture for full scores and dynamic parts, Wood, blue-stained oak, and another extra desk texture (Sibelius blue ripple) has also been added
Timecode
Play > Video and Time > Timecode and Duration now has two new frame rate options:
- 15fps: common in AVI and QuickTime movies downloaded from the Internet
- 29.97fps (drop): NTSC has a frame rate of 29.97fps, but it is common to use the 29.97 (drop) frame format for displaying it. This adds two frames every minute, unless the minute is a multiple of 10. (This compensates for the fact that 29.97fps has 107892 frames per hour rather than the 108000 that would result from true 30fps, so it adds the extra 108 frames every hour. The result is that the timecode value after 1 hour is 01:00:00:00, whereas the raw 29.97fps (non-drop) timecode would be 00:59:56:12.)
Video
New Move forward a frame and Move backward a frame commands added to the Play category in the Menus and Shortcuts page of File > Preferences, allowing the user to advance through an attached video file one frame at a time. The shortcuts Shift-] and Shift-[ are now assigned to these functions by default.
Fixes and other improvements in Sibelius 4.1
Barlines
Choosing Create > Barline > End Repeat with a barline selected no longer causes the barline to be created at the end of the following bar
Bars and bar rests
- Breve rests no longer show spurious leger lines underneath them even when positioned within the staff.
- Moving a start repeat barlines start position no longer affects the spacing of a multirest that follows it.
Beams
- Beams over system/page breaks (especially on grace notes) no longer draw at the bottom of the page, and therefore the crash which resulted from trying to select them no longer occurs
- The Beam over rests checkbox in the Beam and Rest Groups dialog (accessed from Create > Time Signature) now works correctly, i.e. does not need to be switched off and then switched on again before it takes effect
Chord diagrams
- Copying chord diagrams that show chord symbols above them using Opt-click no longer causes Sibelius to crash
- In newly-created scores, fingering text is now a little closer to the bottom of the chord diagram by default
Chord symbols
Chord symbols written in the form e.g. CMaj now transpose correctly
Dynamic parts
- Clicking on a disabled button in the Parts window no longer causes Sibelius to crash (Mac only)
- Copying a passage selection between score and part, one part and another part, one score and another score, etc. no longer causes Sibelius to hang indefinitely or crash
- Importing a house style into a dynamic part that specifies the use of a user-created text style that doesnt exist in the destination score no longer causes Sibelius to crash
- If a dynamic part that was set to print 0 copies is extracted, the resulting extracted part can now be printed correctly
- Copy Part Layout now works correctly in all circumstances
- Changing the vertical spacing of staves in the score now never changes the staff spacing in dynamic parts
- Barlines no longer disappear from dynamic parts when deleting instruments from or adding instruments to the score
- When extracting a dynamic part with Notes > Transposing Score switched on, chord symbols in the extracted part are now transposed correctly
- The hiding and showing of instrument names in dynamic parts (at the top left-hand corner of the first page and the top-center of subsequent pages) is now more reliable, and the options on the House Style page of the Multiple Part Appearance dialog reflect the current hide/show state of the text correctly
- Changing the name of a part directly in the Window > Parts window no longer results in that change sometimes being lost (e.g. by changing settings in Layout > Document Setup)
- Switching between the full score and one or more dynamic parts could sometimes cause some keyboard shortcuts to stop working; this has now been fixed
- When you create a clef change in a part that wont appear because the Multiple Part Appearance settings dictate that clef changes should not appear, Sibelius now gives an advisory message.
- After importing a house style in the Multiple Part Appearance dialog it was possible for some of the options not to take effect unless every page of the dialog was visited after importing the house style; this is now fixed.
- If dynamic parts exist for some staves in the instrument but not all of them, clicking the New Part button in the Parts window will prompt Sibelius to ask the user if they would like dynamic parts created for all the other instruments in the score.
- When adding bars to the end of the score, the added empty bars are now spaced correctly in the parts.
- Sibelius no longer creates lots of copies of the instrument name headers on the first and subsequent pages of the dynamic parts when certain operations are carried out.
- When dragging a system text object, a Gap before bar that falls at the start of a system will not be spontaneously removed.
Edit Sound Sets
The Save as text option in Play > Edit Sound Sets now works correctly
Exporting graphic files
- Exporting a TIFF file into a path that contains accented or other special characters now works correctly (Mac only)
- Graphics copied to the clipboard no longer include one misplaced column of pixels at the extreme left-hand edge of the graphic
- Graphics copied to the clipboard now always export page-specific text items (such as page numbers) correctly
Files
- The File > Open Recent File submenu (and list of recent files in the File > Quick Start dialog) now correctly display files that are stored in paths of longer than 128 characters, instead of simply showing a gap (Windows only)
- The proxy icon path in the Sibelius document title bar is now correctly updated after a File > Save As operation (Mac only)
- When saving a Sibelius score that does not have a .sib file extension, Sibelius 4 no longer erroneously adds the .sib file extension, thus creating a copy of the score (Mac only)
- When opening a Sibelius score that does not have a .sib file extension but does contain one or more periods (full stops) in its name, Sibelius no longer truncates the filename at the point of the first period (Mac only)
- The File > New dialog no longer incorrectly sets scores to be created on Tabloid or A3 paper to actually end up with a page size of Letter or A4 respectively
- It is now possible to Shift-click multiple files in the File > Open dialog to open them simultaneously. Note that due to limitations in Windows 98/Me, you cannot open more than 10 files simultaneously on those operating systems (Windows only).
- The Update Score dialog now shows the name of the file youre opening, in case you open multiple files from an earlier version of Sibelius at the same time and need to set different options for each one
- File > Publish on SibeliusMusic.com now works correctly (Mac only).
- Sibelius no longer allows no manuscript paper to be chosen on the first page of the File > New dialog, thus eliminating the peculiar behavior that could previously have ensued
- If you delete staves from the chosen manuscript paper while in the File > New dialog, extra staves will not then be subsequently added back to your score if you change house style on the House Style page of the dialog
Flexi-time
New Internal MIDI time stamps option on the Flexi-time page of Notes > Flexi-time Options; should be enabled if timing problems or dropped notes are encountered during Flexi-time input, particularly with USB-connected devices such as the Korg Kontrol49 keyboard (Windows only)
Grace notes
Grace notes at the start of the page can no longer be set to beam over a system or page break; this could previously cause visual oddities that when selected could cause Sibelius to crash
Guitar tab
- Sibelius no longer crashes when opening a score that uses a 0-line guitar tab staff type
- When pasting from notation to tab staves, the Guitar Tab Fingering options on the Note Input page of File > Preferences are now properly respected
- Articulations always above the staff (on the Notes and Rests page of House Style > Edit Staff Types) now works correctly in guitar tab staves
House styles
- Sibelius will no longer mistakenly create an extra Note flags text style when opening older scores
- Importing a house style created in an earlier version of Sibelius should no longer cause the text style of existing text to change unexpectedly
- The 20 house styles supplied with Sibelius 4 have all been updated
Instruments
- Eb flute now correctly appears in the Layout > Instruments and Staves dialog
- The Common instruments list now includes tab versions of the acoustic and electric guitars in the Guitars family
- The short instrument names for each family of instruments have been reviewed, and a more consistent scheme adopted for each family
- Transpositions for the baritone, bass and contrabass saxophones have been reviewed
- New C Soprano Saxophone, F Mezzo-soprano Saxophone and C Melody Saxophone instruments have been added to the All instruments list
- The comfortable and professional ranges of the Contrabassoon instrument have been reviewed
- New instruments added in order to fully support the new Sibelius Rock and Pop Collection sound library:
- Semi-acoustic Bass (notation and tab)
- Fender Rhodes®
- Wurlitzer
- Clavinet
- Mellotron (brass, strings, choir and flute)
- Voice (male and female)
Kontakt Player
- Registration of Kontakt Player now works correctly (as of build 6.3.0.27).
- Kontakt Player now initializes the dials in the window correctly based on the default information in the instrument definition files (as of build 6.3.0.27).
- Kontakt Players overload detection threshold is now set at 96% CPU usage, rather than 85%.
- When changing the Sound set for the Kontakt Player device in Play > Playback and Input Devices, Sibelius now automatically unloads all the existing sounds loaded into Kontakt Player for the active score
Lines
The triplet number/bracket line and lyric extender lines are now omitted from the Create > Line dialog, as they should be
Lyrics
When opening scores created in earlier versions of Sibelius, lyric extender lines will not now shift vertical position over page breaks, as they may have done in rare cases in Sibelius 4.0
ManuScript language
- Sibelius now only enumerates plug-in files with the .plg extension when attempting to load plug-ins on start-up
- The deprecated TextStyleIndex function now returns the correct value, allowing plug-ins written for previous versions of Sibelius to function correctly again
- ManuScript no longer gets stuck in an infinite loop when trying to access array element -1
Manuscript papers
- The supplied manuscript papers have been updated to include new Play > Dictionary terms for Garritan Personal Orchestra Sibelius Edition support and Sibelius Rock and Pop Collection support
- All manuscript papers have been updated such that dynamic parts for transposing instruments are set to show transposed pitch by default
- Brass band.sib now uses a bass clef, non-transposing trombone staff for Trombone 3
Menu and dialog appearance
- Heading text in dialog boxes no longer wraps onto two lines, causing letters to disappear (Mac OS X 10.4 only)
- Sibelius 4s version number is now shown correctly on the Sibelius > About Sibelius dialog (Mac OS X 10.2.8 only)
- The entries in File > Open Recent File are now numbered 110, not 10 as before (Windows only)
- The Disable smoothing during playback option has been removed from the Quality dialog (accessed via Play > Playback and Input Devices) as it no longer has any effect (Mac only)

- Volume up/down keys on multimedia keyboards now work correctly (Windows only)
- Menu items that are disabled when no scores are open can no longer be triggered by keyboard shortcuts, resulting in peculiar behavior (Mac only)
- The list of feature sets in the Edit Feature Sets dialog now lists all the installed feature sets
MIDI devices
- Sibelius will no longer crash if the user makes any changes in Audio MIDI Setup while the program is running, and with certain MIDI devices (e.g. those manufactured by Edirol) attached to their computer (Mac only)
- Improved the handling of MIDI devices that are connected or activated while Sibelius is running; in particular, Sibelius on Mac OS X will no longer get into a loop while producing messages informing the user that their playback devices have changed
- Switching a USB-connected MIDI device on while Sibelius is running should now allow Sibelius to find the device. Whether or not it appears automatically is determined by the device drivers provided by the manufacturer of the MIDI device. If your device does not automatically appear in the Play > Playback and Input Devices dialog when switched on while Sibelius is running, click Find New Devices, then before clicking Yes to confirm the search, switch the device on. Sibelius should then correctly detect the device (Windows only).
- Sibelius is now able to filter out the hundreds of spurious MIDI messages generated by the Octave Up/Down buttons on the Creative Prodikeys keyboard, and so no longer crashes when this device is attached
- A number of changes have been made to the Reset Sounds option (which warns you when a score you are opening uses a different sound set and/or playback device than your current setup). The changes are as follows:
- New Reset sounds when devices incompatible checkbox beneath the Warn when sounds are wrong option on the Files page of File > Preferences. The option is only enabled when the Warn option is disabled (since if you want Sibelius to warn you, it doesn't make sense for it to do things automatically). This option corresponds to the value that is set when you hit Yes or No in the Reset Sounds dialog.
- The Reset Sounds option in the Update Score dialog is independent of the main Reset Sounds option. If the Update Score dialog has been shown, then Sibelius will not subsequently prompt the user to reset sounds in the score, as it has already asked them.
- When Sibelius detects a change in the list of playback devices attached to your computer, it now retains the same Use and Sound set settings for those devices that remain the same, rather than resetting them all to the default
- Display smoothing during playback has been removed from the Quality dialog in Play > Playback and Input Devices as it no longer had any effect (Mac only)
- All of Sibeliuss supplied sound sets have been updated to include settings for all the new instruments
Music fonts
- Characters in the Latin-1 Supplement range (ANSI 128159) can now be inserted in text correctly via Character Palette (Mac only)
- Some of the supplied Opus and Inkpen2 fonts erroneously used a Mac FOND ID of 0, which is reserved by the operating system; though this does not cause any problems in practice, it has now been fixed (Mac only)
- Sibelius 4.1 now supplies fonts in Data Fork TrueType Suitcase format (with .dfont extension), with each font supplied as an individual file (e.g. Opus.dfont, Opus Special.dfont, Inkpen2 Script.dfont, etc.) rather than in an old Mac OS 9 Resource Fork TrueType Suitcase format. All the fonts supplied with Sibelius 4.1 have a version number of 4.2, which can be verified in Font Book (Mac only)
Note input
- It is now possible to input a bar rest using the mouse
- Sibelius no longer crashes when you choose Notes > Input Notes in a score with no instruments
Note spacing
Default value for Note spacings may be contracted to n% (on the Notes and Stems page of House Style > Engraving Rules) has been increased from 95% to 97% in new scores
Opening ASCII tab files
Sibelius can now open ASCII tab files without crashing (Mac only)
Opening Finale files
- When opening an ETF file created in Finale 2004 or Finale 2005, Sibelius now advises you to export a MusicXML file from Finale and open that in Sibelius instead, and then proceeds to try and convert the ETF file anyway
- When opening an ETF file created in Finale 2006 or later, Sibelius refuses to convert the file, instead requiring the user to export a MusicXML file from Finale and open that in Sibelius instead
Opening MIDI files
The MIDI file uses this sound set option in the Open MIDI File dialog now lists all the installed sound sets, not just the sound sets used by the currently active playback devices

- In newly-created scores, the Percussion sticking text style now uses a bold, sans serif font, in accordance with the style recommended by the Percussive Arts Society (PAS)
Playback
- One playback device is now enabled by default when running Sibelius for the first time (Windows only)
- When playback reaches the end of a score, the playback line now stops after the final note, so that when you hit Space to restart playback, Sibelius automatically restarts from the beginning of the score (Mac only)
- If using Kontakt Player as the playback device, when switching from a full score to a dynamic part during playback, Sibelius no longer leaves lots of notes hanging indefinitely
- The playback line no longer gets stuck at the end of some scores and hence refuses to play again from the beginning of the score (TT18657)
- If Use reverb is switched off in the Quality dialog, accessed via Play > Playback and Input Devices, click playback (e.g. for Flexi-time input) now works correctly (Mac only)
Plug-ins
- Plug-ins > Accidentals > Respell Flats as Sharps and Respell Sharps as Flats now work correctly on transposing instruments
- Plug-ins > Accidentals > Add Ficta Above Note now uses hidden accidentals to alter the playback of the note above which the ficta is added, instead of using MIDI pitch bend messages, which could cause problems for other instruments sharing the same MIDI channel
- Plug-ins > Batch Processing > Apply House Style to Folder of Scores no longer shows the Update Score dialog for every score it opens that was created in an earlier version of Sibelius, and now shows both the default supplied house style files, and house style files in the users application data folder. It also now allows the user to apply the Default Multiple Part Appearance option if desired.
- Plug-ins > Batch Processing > Convert Folder of Scores to Graphics now saves EPS files to the correct location
- Plug-ins > Notes and Rests > Apply Shape Notes has been updated to correct errors using the wrong noteheads
- Plug-ins > Notes and Rests > Copy Articulations and Slurs now works correctly when matching rhythmic patterns that overlap
- Plug-ins > Proof-reading > What is Where no longer takes a long time to check whether a log file for the current file already exists

Preferences
- The Show all warning messages button on the Other page of File > Preferences now takes effect on all message boxes in Sibelius that have a Dont say this again option
- The default format for printing date and time footers is now date + time rather than date alone
Printing
- Making any change in File > Page Setup now marks the score as dirty, so you will be prompted to save if you close the score without first saving it (Mac only)
- File > Print All Parts now collates multiple copies of dynamic parts by default
- When Sibelius warns you that the orientation of the score you are printing doesnt match the orientation of the paper chosen in File > Page Setup, the Yes and No buttons now work as expected (Mac only)
- When printing multiple parts to a PDF printer driver (e.g. Acrobat Distiller, PDFCreator or PDF995), Sibelius now automatically provides a unique filename for each part, so the user does not need to intervene at all during the creation of the PDFs (Windows only)
- When printing to PDF, Sibelius no longer adds an extra trailing space to the filename of the resulting PDF (Windows only)
Registering Sibelius
- Sibelius will no longer crash if you click Register Later in the Help > Register Sibelius dialog (Mac only)
- Sibelius will no longer generate Computer Numbers that do not generate a corresponding Registration Number.
Rehearsal marks
Choosing Create > Rehearsal Mark with a special barline selected no longer causes the rehearsal mark to be created on the following barline
Selections and passages
- Deleting objects is now at least twice as fast in Sibelius 4.1 as it was in Sibelius 4.0
- Sibelius is no longer prone to apparently random crashes when copying and pasting towards the end of long scores after having been in use for several hours

Slurs
Remaining problems with the second half of slurs after a page break changing position depending on whether or not the previous page was in view have now been fixed.
Staves
- Adding an extra staff above or below an existing staff when starting from a passage selection now hides the added staff everywhere in the score except in the selected system(s)
- Staff types changes in the middle of systems that are hidden with Hide Empty Staves now correctly take effect when that staff later reappears, as before
Text
- Editing text objects no longer corrupts text strings using certain Unicode symbol characters from some fonts (Mac only)

Tutorial videos
- When launching a new tutorial video from the index page, the tutorial video window is now always brought to the front of the stack.
- Several of the tutorial videos have been updated, and all of them are now on average 20% smaller in file size than they were in Sibelius 4.0.
Upgrading Sibelius
- When upgrading from a previous version, Sibelius no longer requires the user to locate the folder in which the previous version is installed; instead, Sibelius presents the user with a list of installed copies of Sibelius and allows him to choose the installation to upgrade
- The Enter Serial Number and Enter Upgrade Code dialogs now only allow the user to proceed if they type in a valid serial number or upgrade code
- Opening on Windows a score with attached video created on Mac (and vice versa) no longer causes Sibelius to crash when trying to locate the video file
