180: How to speed up Sibelius

If Sibelius is slow to start up or the score redraw feels particularly slow on your machine, e.g. navigating around the score by dragging the paper is sluggish, try the following solutions:

Solution 1

Check you are using the latest version of Sibelius. You can find all the upgrades by clicking this link.

Solution 2

In File > Preferences, or the Sibelius menu > Preferences on Mac, do the following from the categories on the left:

For speeding up start up:

  • Ideas - untick Show built-in ideas
  • Playback - tick When starting Sibelius, load this playback configuration, and choose Default from the dropdown list. You can then choose the Playback Configuration you want to use by going to the Play menu, Playback Devices, or Sibelius may prompt you to change to a different Playback Configuration when opening a score.

For speeding up the use of Sibelius:

  • Display - untick Translucent tool windows and set Smoothing to Fastest (Windows only)
  • Score Position - untick Use Different zoom
  • Textures - click both the Color buttons and click OK. This will change the appearance of the score and desk to be plain colors.

Other:

If you don't use the Video feature in Sibelius to compose music to film, you may want to try disabling the use of QuickTime in Sibelius. This will mean QuickTime isn't initialised when Sibelius starts and will speed up Sibelius' start up time:

  • Download this archive: DisableQuicktime.zip
  • Open the archive and double-click the resulting Disable QuickTime.reg file to add its information to your Registry. If you're having problems opening the archive, click here to get more information
  • When asked if you want to proceed, click Yes

Please note: this will only stop Sibelius from using QuickTime; it does not change QuickTime itself, or any other programs on your computer.

Also, make sure your computer meets the required specifications.
