139: Flexi-time - crash when using Roland MIDI keyboards

If you experience crashes when using Flexi-time, or find that notes appear in the score around an eighth-note (quaver) later than they should, then your keyboard may be sending a lot more MIDI data than is necessary, causing Sibelius to crash. This data is MIDI timing information which is not needed by Sibelius.

Sibelius 2 automatically filters out this data and so these problems do not occur. If you haven't yet got Sibelius 2, get an upgrade.

In Sibelius 1.4 you can filter out the extraneous data in the following way by using a program called MIDI OX. You will also need a second program called MIDI Yoke to connect MIDI OX to Sibelius.

  • Download MIDIOX and MIDI Yoke from www.midiox.com.
  • Install MIDI OX and MIDI Yoke, following the instructions on the MIDI OX web site appropriate for your operating system.
  • Run MIDI OX and go to Options > MIDI devices.
  • Select the input (e.g. SB Live! MIDI In) and select the output as MIDI Yoke Junction: 1 then click OK.
  • In Options > MIDI Filter, select the ... box to the right of System Realtime.
  • Switch on all of the options and click OK.
  • Make sure that Filter out Data as well as Display and Apply Filter to Input Monitor too are switched on, then click OK.
  • Leave MIDI OX running, and start Sibelius.
  • In Play/Flexi-time > Equipment select the input device as MIDI Yoke Junction:1 and the output as your normal output e.g. A: SB Live! MIDI synth. Sibelius should now work normally.
