instruments dropping out when playig back and when exporting to mp3 file
Posted by PedroR - 05 May 04:31AM
Hello,

I've been having trouble with instruments dropping out when playing back in the sibelius score and also when exporting the score to mp3 file. I haven't had troubles with this until recently. Troubles started this year notably licensing issues for which I had to get support from avid twice, and with instruments (notably the piano) dropping out or not playing at all, or sounding late or ending too soon etc. Also with dynamics all of which I had no issues with in previous years (I started working with Sibelius during the pandemic). I'm using Sibelius Ultimate Version 2024.3 build 3166 and my macOS is Sonoma 14.4.1. Also I've uploaded screen shots of the Playback devices window and the Audio Engines options.
Maybe someone can help me with this, thanks in advance, Cheers!

Seems your version is suffering from long covid.

There were no screen-shots attached.

On this forum, attachments must be (a) of size less than 1 MByte, and (b) of file types .sib or .png only. JPEGs often fail to attach.

For assistance with playback issues, please attach the Sibelius .sib score file itself (not pictures of it), and tell us where in the score the problem occurs.

Thank you for your response,

That's odd, the screenshots I uploaded were png files. I'm trying again here. I'm also uploading the Sibelius.sib score. I hope this works. Thanks.

Well,it seems the screenshots did not upload. Regarding the Sibelius score, the problem occurs in the piano from mm 52 to 62. Thank you again.

The disappearance of the piano sound at that location is caused by the MIDI C7 instructions written in bars 36-37, which have never been countermanded.

Did the playback problems start when you decided to write al niente hairpins duplicated by a string of Controller 7 messages?

I'd suggest that this is doubly unnecessary. Firstly, the hairpin can do that job all by itself, given suitable settings in the Inspector. And secondly, there's little point in marking a diminuendo on a piano note being held with the pedal. It's going to dim. anyway, and the player has no control over how much!

Hello and thank you for your responses. I don't know what the Inspector is. I put the al niente hairpins in the piano part because I was not getting the desired effect, without them the sound was stopping abruptly. I've removed them. I'm still having problems with the piano part. If I start playing at m. 29 the piano part sounds but when it arrives at mm. 52 through 62, it drops out. The only way I can get the piano to sound at m. 52 is to put the playback cursor at that measure, then press "command save". Also the artificial harmonic in vln1 which starts at m. 60 stops sooner than it should as notated, it stops at the end of measure 61 when it should stop at beat 4 of measure 62. Thank you for your attention.

As well as the hairpins, your score contained MIDI control messages. Read about them in section 6.18 of your Sibelius manual. Learn about the Inspector in section 2.11. The manual is available by clicking the purple '?' top right of the Sibelius window. (Sibelius delights in hiding things in this sort of way!)

Was this score created rather a long time ago, when Sibelius playback didn't respond to cresc. and decresc. hairpins and we had to run a plugin to fake them with MIDI control messages?

There were also peculiarities in some of your dynamic marks.

I attach a version of your score that should work better. I've stripped out all the C7 messages and regularised the dynamics.

Hello Laurence Payne, thank you for your response and for fixing up my score, I really appreciate that. I'll read up on those issues you mention in the manual, I read the manual several years ago when I first started with Sibelius and I must admit I don't remember much of it.

I've been very ill for the past several months so my recollection of when I created this score is a bit foggy, it was either at the end of last year or the beginning of this year. But I've never had this issues before, last summer I wrote a large work for two pianos and had no problems whatsoever with playback, exporting or dynamics, none whatsoever. The troubles started this year beginning with license renewal issues. I started using the plugins because the dynamic markings I put in the score were not responding properly - I don't remember where I saw or read something about the hairpin plugins. Thank you so much for your help, the score you sent me is work fine now, I haven't tried exporting it yet but if troubles with that should arise I'll let you guys know. Cheers!
