Atonal key signature, player filters, and accidentals
Posted by Kyle Smith - 20 Apr 06:20PM (edited 20 Apr 06:21PM)
I am finding that courtesy accidentals are not handled properly when I’m using an atonal key signature with the player filters. I’ll try to attach a score later when I have a moment, but essentially the steps to reproduce are:

1. Create a score with an atonal key
2. In a single staff, add two two-note chords in a single voice (i.e. a quarter note E and G# above on beat one, and a quarter note G(#) [same as beat one] and B above on beat two).
3. In the part, filter for player 1 and hide the two notes (G# and B).

The player 1 G# on beat one gets hidden, and I expect the player two G# on beat two to automatically get a # accidental, but it does not. The note still plays as G# because it is being affected by the (hidden) player 1 accidental on beat 1. I can add an accidental to the G(#) on beat two, but it’s redundant in the score, and I cannot hide the accidental in the score.

Is that the expected behavior? Thanks.

Check your settings in "Engraving Rules" -> "Accidentals and Dots": the option "Allow hidden notes to update accidentals" needs to be unchecked.

That was it. Thanks! Didn’t see that in the docs. And the way I read/interpret that is backwards from how it actually works, so I wouldn’t have guessed it anyways.

Circling back to this - I'm having an issue now with unison notes that share an accidental. When I go into the parts and filter for "player 2" in the 1st part, and "player 1" in the 2nd part, the 1st part gets the accidental hidden, whereas the 2nd part shows it as it should. "Allow hidden notes to update accidentals" is unchecked. I've attached a sample file, using 2024.3.1.

Yeah I think there's a bug there. The sharp should not be hidden in that case.
