Sib. 6.x: Extending an anacrusis / pick-up bar
Posted by jbuh - 08 Nov 12:29PM
Hi! Does anyone know of a simple way of extending an anacrusis bar - I've set my score up with a 2-beat pick-up and want to change it to two-and-a-half beats.

What works (of course) is to copy everything from the first full bar to the end of the score, create a new score with the required anacrusis, and paste into the new score, but I suspect there's a simpler way...

Regards

You can add a new pickup bar (directly or via the Add Pickup Bar plugin), copy any music you want to keep into it from the old pickup bar, then system-delete the old pickup (check no headers etc are still attached to it)

Does Sibelius 6 have the "Add Pickup Bar" and "Merge Bars" plugins? If not, you can download them. Add a eighth note pickup bar, metge it to the existing one.

For a one-off you might find it quicker to select the existing pickup bar, insert a time signature of 5/8, Copy/Paste the 4/4 from the next bar over the 5/8 (saying No to "rewrite...?") and finally delete the unwanted 4/4 in bar 2.

Which is, presumably, exactly what the pair of plugins would actually do.

The plugin Resize Bar, which ships with Windows 7+ and can be downloaded for free for Sib 6, will change the length of a bar, and it maintains the system data in the first bar.

http://www.sibelius.com/download/plugins/index.html?plugin=238

There are a number of resize options. They are not described in beats, but in durations, so if you wanted to add an 8th note to your bar, you could do something like is shown in the screenshot.

Resize Bar is really pretty awesome. It is great for doing things like turning a regular bar into a pickup bar, or making bars at the end of a repeat section smaller to compensate for the pickup bars. ll you need to do is have rests at the start or end of a bar, and the plugin will effectively trim those away, and reduce the bar size appropriately.

(It actually does this by adding a bar of a different size, copying what it needs into that bar, and then deleting the original bar, moving system data if required, but you really don't need to know that to use it).

Hi everyone, and many thanks for all those suggestions - I feel most spoilt for choice.

In time, I'll probably have a go at all of them; right now my problem is moving the unzipped .plg files into the Plugin folder I've created.

Win 8.1 refuses to play ball and keeps on giving me a 0x80004005 error.... so it looks as if I'm off on a minor detour through MS and other techie support sites....

Hope I can get back to the real job before too long!

Thanks again.

Hello all,

I've just re-discovered the way I did this a few years ago that I've been hunting for for ages - and was right in front of my nose!

The easiest way I've found for 'extending' an anacrusis bar is to create a fresh one, then copy>paste, and delete the existing one.

How do you create a new one?
Go to create a new TIME SIGNATURE, then:
- chose the same time signature you currently have (sib6 will duplicate it so it is before the anacrusis, not just after)
- Select "Start with bar of length:" and chose length of anacrusis you want/ need,
- Also make sure you also tick "Allow cautionary".
- Click OK then click it at the start of your music (I tend to click over the existing time signature), and voila! Your anacrusis bar is there!

Just delete the bonus time signature at the start of the first full bar and you're good to go.
Sib6 will even number it as "bar 0" which I've found helpful for verse/chorus repeats of songs.

Hope that all makes sense, and hope it helps!
