8.5.1 bug in text editing
Posted by Jody Hughes - 01 Feb 04:35PM
Hi

This was present in 8.5.0 (I didn't notice it in 8.3, which I used very little.)

Summary: the key commands for selecting word-by-word (shift-alt-[left arrow] and shift-alt-[right arrow] ) on Mac are not working within Sibelius text objects. This affects all text objects I've checked (whether staff, system objects, or within a Comment).

To replicate:
• open a text object containing several words for editing.
• with the cursor placed left of some text, use shift-alt-[right arrow] multiple times to select a series of words

This should result in an increasing series of words being selected, one more to the right with each iteration of the key command. But, after the first iteration, which works as expected, further iterations delete the selected word and select the next word to the right in its place.

Same underlying bug, but a different outcome:
• open the same text object
• with the cursor placed right of some text, use shift-alt-[left arrow] multiple times to select a series of words

Again, it should result in a series of words being selected. In this case, two outcomes:

a) if the cursor is placed to the right of a word:
the first iteration works as expected, the second iteration deletes the selected word and selects the next word to the left, but further iterations appear to be doing nothing. In fact, I think they are pasting a non-printing non-spacing character (as I have to press [arrow] several times to get past this point in the text object).

b) if the cursor is placed to the right of a space or punctuation mark
the first iteration of the left key command selects that character, but nothing else seems to happen on subsequent iterations of the key command.

This may only affect Macs, as the key commands are system-specific.

Hi Jeremy, I've noticed this as well and the developers are aware of the problem.

Just for info, the equivalent command (ctrl-shift-left/right) seems to work as expected on 8.5.1 in Windows 10.

I looked to see if there was a way to redefine the keystroke, but the only command I see attached to that keystroke is Selection > Extend selection to start of bar. Changing that shortcut does not appear to affect the text editing.

Thanks for catching this!

Thanks for checking on Windows, Bob. These are OS commands, so there is nothing to do except hope that Sib devs can find what they broke and fix it.

I am surprised how often I use these when working, especially in Comments. (When I am editing for a composer who uses Sib, I put explanations and carry on conversations about the editing process in Comments. Apparently I re-write things quite a lot, possibly to get rid of a tone of exasperation…)

cheers

Your Comments to composers are nutritious indeed, Jeremy, and in my experience, the original tone of exasperation has always been successfully removed.

Ha!

When I was writing that, I considered that some people I've worked for might read it, but I decided that, almost without exception, they're all nice sensible people and would take it in the not serious (even self-mocking) way it was intended. Which you did.

best wishes

Alt-shift-left/right works as expected in 8.4.2 on a mac, so it's only from 8.5-> ...
