589: Opening .sit and .hqx files

Some of the older files on our Help Center have been compressed with Stuffit technology, using the .sit or .hqx format. Older versions of the Mac OS included Stuffit Expander and would open these files automatically. The more recent versions of Mac OS do not include Stuffit Expander, so you may need to download and install it (free of charge) from Stuffit's website:

  • Go to Stuffit's website
  • choose the appropriate Stuffit Expander option for your OS and language
  • Click the Start Download Now button
  • The Stuffit Expander .dmg file should open automatically once it finishes downloading. If it doesn't, double-click on it
  • Double-click on the Stuffit Expander installer and follow the prompts to complete the installation

When Stuffit Expander has finished installing you should be able to open .sit and .hqx files by double-clicking on them. If you're having difficulties, you should check that computer is using Stuffit Expander to open the file:

  • Select the .sit or .hqx file and choose Get Info from the menu
  • Under Open With choose Stuffit Expander
  • Close the Info window and double-click the file again
